Soccer (non-American football) is probably the earth's most popular sport. Collected evidence points to gameplay in China during the second and third centuries BC when players dribbled leather balls prior kicking them into small wire handled cardboard containers.
Romans and Greeks also played a similar sport, where either a wagon or chariot wheel was rolled up a hill and then down the other side. The use of arms and hands were banned from play, as they were necessary for keeping one's toga in place.
Credit for the early growth of modern soccer is directly linked to Great Britain, where according to unsubstantiated legends, the severed heads of Danish criminals replaced soccer balls which were often in short supply (due to theft and other forms of criminal activity). To enliven play, punching, biting and gouging were permitted occasionally leading to a crescendo of gratuitous violence (currently associated with video games and low-budget movies) as games reached their conclusion.
