The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) has revised its guidelines to make lacrosse shoulder pads safer. NOCSAE ND200 is the first-ever performance standard for chest protection to protect players from a syndrome known as Commotio Cordis.
What is Commotio Cordis?
Commotio Cordis is a syndrome that can kill. It strikes when someone’s chest is hit at just the right time and with just enough force to trigger an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. Commotio Cordis (literally struck heart) is a risk every time someone’s chest gets hit in any sport, but it resides towards the top of the list in lacrosse.
Who does ND200 impact?
Effective January 1, 2022:
Shoulder pads for boys’ field players must be designed for lacrosse and meet NOCSAE standard ND200.
Boys’ and girls’ goalie chest protectors must be designed for lacrosse and meet the NOCSAE standard, ND200.
All chest protectors and shoulder pads must contain the NOCSAE logo and SEI certification mark on the packaging and the product to be legal for play.
Parents, Coaches, & Youth Players
Today’s youth lacrosse players need more protection than ever. Since Commotio Cordis still doesn’t have a proven treatment, it’s up to parents and coaches to give youth players all of today’s state-of-the-art equipment.
The Good Sport has ND200 compliant shoulder pads in stock.
