In January 2022, The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment revised its guidelines to make lacrosse shoulder pads safer. NOCSAE ND200 is the first-ever performance standard for chest protection to protect players from a syndrome known as Commotio Cordis. This ruling was in effect last season, but enforcement was nearly nonexistent because of reduced product availability due to COVID supply chain challenges.

This year officials promise more strict enforcement. All chest protectors and shoulder pads must contain the NOCSAE logo and SEI certification mark on the packaging and the product to be legal for play. Those players not complying may be immediately disqualified from the competition.
What is Commotio Cordis?
Commotio Cordis is a syndrome that can kill. It strikes when someone’s chest is hit at just the right time and with enough force to trigger an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. Commotio Cordis (literally struck heart) is a risk every time someone’s chest gets hit in any sport, but it resides towards the top of the list in lacrosse.
